Behind the Mask

3D Mixed Media assemblage of everyday and vintage findings.  Inspired by *Blackamoor Jewellery.

These sculptures were Inspired by my fascination with Identity and who we are. The way we think about ourselves, are viewed by the world and the characteristics that define us. We hide our true identity behind the masks we wear, hiding our true feelings or intentions, slipping in and out of being authentic, to ourselves and others. The truth is, we all wear masks, it serves as a barrier between you and the world. It keeps us safe from judgement and harm. What others don’t know won’t hurt.

What lies behind these metaphorical masks?

"Don't be fooled by me.
Don't be fooled by the face I wear
for I wear a mask, a thousand masks,
masks that I'm afraid to take off,
and none of them is me".

Charles C. Finn - Poet

*Blackamoor is a European art style from the Early Modern period depicting highly stylised figures, usually African males but sometimes other non-European races, in subservient or exoticised form dressed in turbans and jewels. Blackamoor is often found in sculpture, jewellery, furniture and decorative art. Although deemed racist in todays political climate they are a Venetian tradition and are considered collectibles in the art world.
